SETI and the Cosmic Quarantine Hypothesis :: Astrobiology Magazine :: Search for Life in the Universe

In this essay, Soter examines the Drake Equation, which asks how many technically advanced civilizations exist in our galaxy. He also looks at the Fermi Paradox, which questions why, if there are other technological civilizations nearby, we haven't heard from them.

Amino acids, fatty acids, protiens and carbohydrates (sugars).
With these basic building blocks of life abundent in space, it is hard to imagine that life could be unique to earth alone.
Thru panspermia, whether weak, direct, strong or mass ejected, these ingriedients are distributed thru-out the universe, spreading the seeds of life.

Mexican born physicist, Miguel Alcubierre has outlined a proposal for a theoretical superluminal interstellar propulsion system.
The Alcubierre Warp Drive.
Hyper-fast interstellar travel via a modification of spacetime geometry.
Below is a link to his original paper where he, in his own words describes the theory in great detail. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in theoretical propulsion systems and not familiar with Alcubierre's work. The text is in PDF format.

Time Travel

Are you interseted in time travel? Would you like to learn more and discuss your theories with others? Maybe you are a time traveler and you'd like to tell your story. Do you ever wonder...

Do you ever wonder if there are other worlds out there, with intelligent beings on them? Maybe what they might look like? (aside from the stereotypical "little green dude" type E.T.) Maybe you believe they have already been here, and they check up on us from time to time. history shows this belief to go back thousands of years. Lets hear some of your views and thoughts on this. Everyone has a very unique and interesting perspective on this topic, so lets hear what YOU think. please take a moment and cast a vote while your at it.

In 1961, Dr. Frank Drake, now president of the SETI institute, developed an equation that allows us to make an estimate by multiplying seven factors required for the prevalence of life.

These factors are as follows:
  • R= the number of suitable stars (stars like our sun) that form in our galaxy per year. astronomers estimate this number to be around ten.
  • Fp= The fraction of these stars that have planets. probably at least half of all stars have planets.
  • Ne= The number of Earth-like planets (meaning planets that have liquid water) within each planetary system. For our solar system, the number would be one, our very own earth.
  • Fl= The fraction of Earth-like planets where life develops.
  • Fi= The fraction of life sites where intelligent life develops. Intelligence, from our perspective is based on things like symbolic language like our english language, mathematics, ect. sinse these are required for communication.
  • Fe= The fraction of intelligent life sites where communication develops. There could be early civilizations that may not yet have developed technologies such as radio telescopes. (We humans belonged to this category up untill the twentieth century). or there could be others that can, but dont for their own reasons.
  • L= The "lifetime" (in years) of a communicative civilization. Humans have been communicative for less than a meager 100 years.
  • N= The number of communicative civilizations within our own Milky Way galaxy. Dr.Frank Drakes current estimate is at 10,000 communicative civilizations in our Milky Way galaxie alone! Think of the possibilities, considering there are trillions of galaxys in the universe. It would be a mathemateical impossibility for there not to be astronomical amounts of these civilizations. We are NOT alone my friends. (I.M.H.O)
